An age-old question, what came first – egg or the chicken? This particular question has managed to get everyone thinking about it. There have been many scientific studies conducted to get an answer to this. The answer to this contains more than just a little history.

The first thought that comes to mind when faced with this question is that chickens hatch from eggs. So, how can there be a chicken without first having an egg? But in order for an egg to be laid, there should be a chicken. So, how can there be a chicken without an egg? Now, this is a never-ending loop that is difficult to get out of.

It is probably not easy to have one without the other. Hence, it is chicken and the egg. Confusing isn’t it. Well, to clear that confusion let us look at how our historians solved this and came up with a plausible answer.

We are all aware of the fact that all living things in nature evolve through DNA. Next, in a chicken, DNA from a male sperm cell should combine with a female ovum to form a zygote, which is the first cell of a baby chicken. Taking this into consideration, it can be said that the egg comes first. Prior to the first real chicken egg, there were only non-chicken animals and non-chicken eggs. Hence, we can say that they both did not arrive at the same time.

While some believed that the egg came first, there were others who believed that the chicken arrived first and hence, raised arguments. It has been found that a protein found only in a chicken’s ovaries is essential for the formation of the chicken egg. Hence, there was the traditional non-chicken egg that was produced by a non-chicken animal. Later came the mutated chicken that enabled it to produce the standard chicken. The mutation included a protein which accelerated the development of the hard shell. This hardshell is necessary for protecting the delicate fluids and yolk while the chick grows inside the egg.

From all of these studies, arguments, and research, there has been a conclusion drawn which phrased the question “Did the egg come first or the chicken?” in a few ways. The question is interpreted in the following ways with a justified answer.

  • Which came first – the chicken or just any egg?
  • Which came first – the chicken or a chicken egg (an egg laid by chicken)?
  • Which came first – the chicken or an egg containing a chicken?

Now the answers to the above questions go something like these:

  • The egg – species that lay eggs that have been in existence much longer than the chickens.
  • The chicken. In other words, for a chicken egg to be laid by a chicken, there should definitely be a chicken to lay the chicken egg.
  • The egg, evidently, an egg containing a chicken had to come before the first chicken.
