In 2010, Reliance Industries acquired Infotel Broadband Services Limited (IBSL) by purchasing a 96% stake during the 4G auction. It was the only company to own broadband spectrum in all 22 zones of India and was later renamed Reliance Jio Infocomm Limited in 2013.

Although Reliance Industries initially planned to launch Jio’s services in 2015, it began with a beta rollout on December 27 for employees and their families. The testing phase eventually expanded to 1.5 million subscribers before nationwide availability.

Reliance Jio built its workforce with a strong focus on young talent. With around 60,000 employees and an average age of 30, the company aimed to create a dynamic team to develop a leading data services enterprise.

Reliance launched its own LYF brand LTE smartphones, including models like Water 1, Water 2, Earth 1, and Flame 1. The company also partnered with Intex to supply affordable 4G-enabled handsets with Voice over LTE support.
