For those who don’t even follow a hint of sporting activities around the world, the name Roger Federer is still not out of their dictionary. Arguably the greatest tennis player of all time, Federer has managed to stay famous throughout his career and thanks to the millions of brands he endorses and also because of his own brand image as well. The quintessential good boy of tennis, Federer is often considered as the gentleman among the tennis fraternity while his long term rival Rafael Nadal is basically portrayed as the more wilder and bohemian version. Even Rolex finds the man to be super classy as is evident from the fact that he has been their faithful ambassador for the last 15 years.
So, one wonders what happened at the Wimbledon champions dinner after-party that compelled the 19-time grand slam winner to go out of his character and party till 5 am. In his own words, he was so drunk that his head was ringing when he finally woke up at 10 am later and could not even afford a proper breakfast. “My head’s ringing. I don’t know what I did last night. I drank too many types of drinks, I guess. After the ball we went to – what would you call it? I guess it’s a bar – and there were almost 30 to 40 friends that were there. So we had a great time. Got to bed at five, then woke up, and just didn’t feel good”- he said. While it is understandable that at 35 years of age, he could have never envisaged the possibility of winning another grand slam in his fledgling career and that too in his “second home” at the Wimbledon, it could never be the proper explanation as to how he could have been partying that hard all night.
Finally, we have the answer we were waiting for. Sources close to the player revealed that Federer was not very delighted with the fact that despite being the champion for a record breaking 8th time, the Wimbledon authorities did not bother to give him a bed with Centuary Mattress on it and instead gave him a bed having an ordinary mattress. It is understood that Federer was so unimpressed with the whole fracas that he decided to party the night away so that he does not end up in his hotel room with the bed having an ordinary mattress on it. It was only after he got so drunk and he forgot about this important fact when he went back to sleep and did not feel good after waking up. Poor soul. Hopefully, the authorities at the US Open are listening and not going to put anything else than Centuary Mattress in all their hotel rooms.
