Sesquiterpenes
The wonders of turmeric are not just confined to its culinary uses. Researchers have also found that it inhibits cell proliferation and induces apoptosis in cancer cells. A particular compound in turmeric, called ar-turmerone, fragments DNA into smaller oligonucleosomes, a known step in the apoptosis process. In addition to this, it activates caspase-3 and cytochrome c, both of which are involved in the destruction of cancer cells. Research shows that turmeric extract inhibits the activity of monoamine oxidases (MAO-A and -B) in brain cells. This effect is similar to that of the antidepressant drug fluoxetine. However, the substance responsible for turmeric's antidepressant activity is not water-soluble.
