This country quintessentially demonstrates the fortune oil and gas exploration can provide. Once one of the poorest countries of the Gulf region, Qatar currently has the highest per capita income in the entire world. Al Thani family has ruled this country since mid-1800s and for 150 years. In 1916 the country had become a British protectorate by the permission of the emir of Qatar. It acquired independence in 1971, and after denying to join the United Arab Emirates, it formed a sovereign nation. The current ruler is Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani. This Middle East oil and gas giant is situated at the peninsula bordering the Persian Gulf and Saudi Arabia. It's high GDP growth is characterised by manufacturing, construction, and financial services sectors. The State of Qatar has the lowest rate of unemployment, excess of oil reserves, and expanding FDI in non-energy sectors. Qatar has recently won the bid for reception of 2022 Football World Cup that has made it accelerate infrastructure projects such as exotic stadium , metro railways and other sports related places. It owns the prestigious Al Jazeera satellite TV. The country however is often facing controversies related to illicit treatment of its migrant workers, passport holding and forced labour.
