Books and novels are published in thousands across the world every year and a few of them do not go by so easily. Some books get the limelight for all the good reasons whereas others get for some wrong reasons. Many eminent authors haven’t been spared this agony. Be it the theme or some particular mention or any other reason, if the public and critics do not like it, it will bear the brunt in some way or the other. THE SATANIC VERSES BY SALMAN RUSHDIE
Salman Rushdie has always been one of the most controversial writers since the very beginning. And one of the examples for this is his book called ‘The Satanic Verses’. The book published in 1988 was considered blasphemous by the Islam. It was burned down in many parts of the world and received severe criticism worldwide. Not just this, but the Supreme leader of Iran then issued a fatwa declaring to kill Rushdie and the publishers of the book a well. It indeed was a tough time for Rushdie to cope with. However, the fatwa has still not been taken back as the leader who issued it had died.
THE HINDU BY WENDY DONIGER
A book by Wendy Doniger, the Hindu recently published by Penguin books became a topic of grave concern in India. Some controversial quotes and biases on the subject as claimed became a bit too aggressive to handle. As the book was published and controversy came into light, a lawsuit was filed against the publishers and they decided to destroy all the copies in a minimum time span. However, it created further controversy as other authors under the publishing house were not happy with this decision.
THE ORIGIN OF SPECIES BY CHARLES DARWIN
One of the oldest and most famous books that changed a lot of concepts in science and evolution, Charles Darwin’s book was published in 80’s and is still referred by many students across. However, the book too doesn’t have a clean slate. The book is said to make an attack on Christianity and thus received severe criticism for some of its controversial remarks.
LOLITA BY VLADIMIR NABOKOV
Published in the 50’s, this is one book that took all the negative publicity. Based on the theme of sexuality, the subject wasn’t appreciated by many people due to explicit mention on the subject. The novel revolves around a middle aged professor who gets sexually involved with her step daughter. Many leading journals and magazines publicly criticized the book.
THE PERKS OF BEING A WALLFLOWER BY STEPHEN CHOBSKY
An awesome theme and some memorable lines made this book quite famous but the mention of homosexuality didn’t spare the novel with a trail of controversy. In spite of having some real issues and quite vivid description of teenage problems, the book got some backfire and was withdrawn from various places. However, after the movie release based on the novel it has become far more popular.
